“The End Might Be Near”

According to the Mayan calendar the world was supposed to end two years ago. Since the early days of the Christian church “prophets” have tried to predict the end of the world. We all have seen those caricatures of a bearded old man wearing a robe and sandals holding a sign that reads “Repent The End Is Near.” When I went to a commercial center recently, I saw indications that lots of people are spending like there is no tomorrow. Perhaps they believe the end is near, but certainly they are not repenting. I guess most people keep on living and spending not thinking about the end of the world. People of biblical faith certainly don’t have time to worry about the end of the present order. We need to be busy changing the broken world we live in. Scripture says: “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Mark 13:32) That is good enough for me, so I am making plans for the days to come and specially for Sunday morning. People of faith live by the belief that they must help put an end to certain things. Things like deadly violence in malls, schools, theaters and even in homes. People of faith want to promote an end to poverty, homelessness, hunger, unemployment, and all forms of discrimination. Christians need to be engaged in promoting an end to wars among the peoples of this planet. We must seek ways to put an end to all forms of injustice at home and abroad. I think you get the idea about where we need to direct our individual and collective minds, faith and work. We have a lot to do before we can declare the end of anything. When the end of time really comes, let each of us be found busily engaged in actions that last for eternity. We must repent! Yes, repent about wasting time and life without purpose. It would be a waste to reach the end and not have anything eternal to show for the life we had.
