“Light Travel”

Imagine being able to travel at the speed of light. Scientists tell us that light travels at 186,000 miles per second. That is sort of fast and presently not possible, but we can all travel light. The prophet Isaiah is always relevant to our situation. His words spoken and recorded so long ago have relevance for us as we plan to take trips. He declares: “See the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare” (Isa. 42:9) Reading this passage made me think about my love for old things. I think that as I grow older I tend to get more attached to things which were good and useful in the past but now are not working as well as they did. Some of us find it difficult to let go of familiar things and habits that bring some degree of comfort to our lives. We seldom realize how burdened we can become by “the former things.” Most of us have had the experience of packing way too much to go on a trip. I know from personal experience that lugging heavy bags is not fun at all. I think Isaiah may be unto something important here. Perhaps we should travel light in life, so that we can be free to do more for others and enjoy the things that really matter. Now is a good time to start divesting ourselves of so much unnecessary baggage and learning to live as people of faith and hope. We don’t need as much as we think we do. As we come to the end of summer, clean out some of your clutter in your closets, garage and attic. However; more important is to unload clutter from memories, heart and minds. Oh, what a relief it is to let the former things pass and enjoy the newness of life! You may not be able to travel at the speed of light yet, but you can travel light now!
