“ Plus Signs” By Emilio Chaviano August 27, 2014

I never knew Roger Ebert in person, but I remember listening to his movie reviews before venturing out to see a new release. Mr. Ebert suffered multiple surgeries which left him unable to speak or eat. In spite of his enormous limitations, Roger continued to work and inspire many by his personal courage and invincible spirit. Those who were close to him were edified by the fabric of his character. I once heard a woman on the radio say that she felt much better knowing that there was a Roger Ebert in this world. That statement is a wonderful testimony of the difference one person can make. Those of us who can talk, eat, drive, work, love, shop, bless and gripe should think about how to make a positive difference in someone’s life. Make a list of people you are glad to know because they make your life better in some way. Chances are that they also are glad to know that you live in their world. I believe that to live by faith means choosing to be a plus sign rather than a minus sign. You might never know how much you’ve added to someone’s life, but they know, and that is what matters most. Ebert was 70 when he died last year. In his memoir, “Life Itself” he wrote: “To make others less happy is a crime. To make ourselves unhappy is where all crime starts. We must try to contribute joy to the world.” Mr. Ebert did not claim to be a professing Christian (at least not publicly) but his legacy is a great reminder to people trying to make a positive difference. For Christians the Cross is the ultimate plus sign reminding us to bring joy into the world. It is easier than you think to turn a minus into a plus. Try it and someone will be happier starting with you!
