Statins and Dementia [Press TV]

Scientists believe taking cholesterol-lowering statins prevent from dementia in individuals at a high risk of developing the condition.

According to a study published in the Neurology journal, taking statins for about 5-7 years, reduces the risk of dementia by 50 percent.

University of Michigan School of Public Health researchers believe statins prevent from Alzheimer’s disease by influencing cerebral insulin pathways.

The study concluded that apart from the benefits of statins in protecting individuals against heart attack by lowering cholesterol levels, these drugs can be used as a preventative treatment for dementia.

Several studies have enumerated high cholesterol levels, type-2 diabetes, obesity and hypertension as the main risk factors for dementia.
