Reflections On the Jerry Lee Lewis Interpretation of «The Green Green Grass Of Home»

In the year 1968, the underwriter received a birthday gift from his cousin in New York. She gave him the phonograph record [the small 45 RPM Version] of the song «The Green Green Grass Of Home» interpreted by the versatile country music and rock artist Jerry Lee Lewis.

While the critics have considered this song one of the lowest points in the career of the singer, Jerry Lee Lewis [with his interpretation] tugged at the heart and soul of the underwriter who has been trying to find the definition of house, home, and stability in an era where everything is negotiable.

The verse of «that old house is still standing» and «the old oak tree» evoked the sense of belonging to a family and stability. The idea of family being something that is forever and not some business that was full of pre-nuptual agreements. It is this sense of stability that is not present in an era where half of the marriages in the USA end up in a divorce.

The same verse deals with the concept of family division which hit the hardest on those who were unable to see their grandparents or had to travel many distances to see them. The cause of such pain being the fools on the hill in La Habana, Washington, New York, and Moscow.

While it talked about a prisoner reflecting on his days of youth before dying, «The Green Green Grass Of Home» evokes a love of God and love of land in a place and time where both have seemed to disappear.

It appears that the love of money and material things have replaced the love for God and Family. Our society has allowed many aberrations to affect it which includes the international «obligations» that please others but do not please one self.

Jerry Lee Lewis deserves to be praised for his effort in evoking the sense of pride in God, Family, and even Country that is evident in «The Green Green Grass Of Home». It is a song that deserves to be heard many times in the hope that maybe we as a people can wake up and find a way to return to a simpler way of life.

The simpler way of life would include Love of God, Love Of Family, Love Of Self, Love Of Land, and taking time for the simpler things in life such as helping a neighbour in distress. It would also include praying before eating and conversing in God in times of peace as well.

The song also challenges people to think of a time when there was no excess violence on TV or in the news. It also challenges [with the thought of home] to return cleanliness to the society that the person lives on.

The cleanliness that is discussed is not washing ones hand but the need to clean one’s mind, heart, and soul of all of the negative and perverted thoughts that assault us from within and without on a daily basis.

It is with these words that the underwriter asks the readers to reflect on «The Green Green Grass Of Home» and think about the true meaning of Christmas which would be God, Family, Country, and how Jesus was born to save all of us.

    1. Thank you for your comment Dogsmeat. The review which was written almost a decade ago (as well as the Jerry Lee Lewis version of the Green Green Grass of Home) was (in my opinion) what I felt that had to be captured. Both are still valid in todays world as it was a decade ago. Thanks again
