Chivas USA Notes (3-2 win vs. San Jose Earthquakes, The Home Depot Center, Carson, CA, 4/24/2010)

 

·         Chivas USA put together its best 90 minutes of soccer as the team topped the San Jose Earthquakes by a 3-2 score on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. Sacha Kljestan, Justin Braun and Chukwudi Chijindu scored their first goals of the season for the Red-and-White, who improve to 2-3-0 (W-L-T) in 2010.

·         The Red-and-White took the 1-0 lead on a great shot from Huntington Beach native Sacha Kljestan in the 25th minute, when the team captain took a pass from Blair Gavin and shot past Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon from 20 yards. San Jose equalized just before halftime on a hotly contested penalty kick which was converted by Chris Wondolowski.

·         Nine minutes into the second half, Justin Braun headed home a Mariano Trujillo cross to restore Chivas USA’s lead. The goal was Braun’s fourth all-time against San Jose, which leads the team. Defender and co-captain Jonathan Bornstein also assisted on the play.

·         In the 87th minute, second-year midfielder Michael Lahoud played a long ball that found Chukwudi Chijindu behind the San Jose defense, and the forward finished a low shot past Joe Cannon to give the Red-and-White a two-goal cushion. With Chijindu’s goal, Chivas USA scored three goals in a match for the first time since October 4, 2008 at D.C. United.

·         Late into injury time, the Earthquakes earned a consolation goal when Steven Beitashour struck a hard shot from distance after a clearance to pull San Jose within a goal. The match ended at 3-2, giving Chivas USA its second home win in a row.

·         Rookie midfielders Blair Gavin and Ben Zemanski, both coming out of the University of Akron, manned central midfield for the Red-and-White, and Anaheim’s Carlos Borja made his MLS debut, entering the match in the 79th minute for Carlos Borja.

·         Chivas USA Head Coach Martín Vásquez, on tonight’s match: “I think we earned the win, and we got a good result. ·         The Red-and-White have Sunday off before returning to the training field on Monday at 10:00 a.m., and will train at 10:00 on Tuesday and Wednesday, before departing on Thursday for Chicago. A full training schedule for the week will be published on Monday. The Red-and-White will take on the Chicago Fire next Saturday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. CT (5:30 p.m. PT).
