Chivas USA Notes (1-2 loss to Seattle Sounders, Qwest Field, Seattle, WA., 10/15/10)

·         Chivas USA fell for the first time in league play at Qwest Field on Friday night by a score of 2-1 against the Seattle Sounders in front of a sellout crowd of 36,356 fans in Seattle, WA.

·         The Red-and-White (8-16-4) had not lost or conceded a goal in league play against the Sounders before tonight’s match until Seattle’s Steve Zakuani scored at the 9th minute of play. Chivas USA was the only MLS team that the Sounders (14-9-6) had not defeated during the regular season until tonight.

·         Chivas USA went down in the scoreboard early in the match when the Red-and-White defenders couldn’t clear the ball outside the box and Seattle’s Parke passed it to Zakuani, who got in between a handful of defenders and dribbled Zach Thornton to put it into the net for the first goal of the match at the 9th minute. The Sounders kept attacking and encountered the second goal very soon when Freddy Montero set the ball to Zakuani, who cut it inside to Osvaldo Alonso, and the Seattle midfielder knocked it to Thornton’s far post at the 25th minute for the decisive goal.

·         The Red-and-White’s only goal came very late in the match at the 92nd minute when Rodolfo Espinoza sent in a cross from the right hand side to Jesus Padilla, who won the header and scored just a minute before the final whistle. It was Padilla’s sixth goal of the season.

·         Chivas USA was without forward Alan Gordon, who is serving a two game suspension, and Justin Braun, who is recuperating from a concussion suffered last week. Giancarlo Maldonado started the match and put the ball inside the net in the 60th minute but the play was ruled offside.

·         The Red-and-White remains with 28 points and with a record of 8-16-4 in the Western Conference, eliminated from Playoff contention. The team has two matches left in the season, first on the road against the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday and the last game of the season against the Chicago Fire on October 23 on Fan Appreciation Night.

·         Chivas USA Head Coach Martín Vásquez, on tonight’s match: “If go down 2-0 early in the game, playing here it’s going to be difficult. We tried mainly in the second half to get a goal but the goal for us came too late.” A full audio recap from Vásquez, as well as quotes from Michael Lahoud and Jesus Padilla can be found on Dentro del Rebaño, the official bilingual blog of Chivas USA.

·         The Red-and-White will travel to Los Angeles on Saturday and will take Sunday off. Chivas USA will resume training on Monday at 10:00 a.m. PT on Field 6 at The Home Depot Center before traveling on Tuesday to San Jose for the match against the Earthquakes on Wednesday.

·         Last home game: Chivas USA will celebrate Fan Appreciation Night for the final MLS game of 2010 on Saturday, October 23 at 8:00 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center. For more information, or for tickets to the match, please call 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visit cdchivasusa.com.
