Chivas USA Notes – (1-0 win vs. Portland Timbers, The Home Depot Center, Carson, CA, 6/01/11)
· Chivas USA midfielder Marcos Mondaini came back from a four game suspension and gave a 1-0 win to the Red-and-White against the Portland Timbers on Saturday night before 14,076 fans at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
· With the result, Chivas USA improves its record to 4-4-5 (17 pts) and is now in sixth place in the Western Conference. The Red-and-White will now visit the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, June 11, at 5:30 p.m. PT on Prime Time and KWHY Channel 22, and also W Radio 690 AM.
· Chivas USA scored the only goal of the match when forward and Youth Academy product Chris Cortez played the ball into space for midfielder Paulo Nagamura, who streaked down the sideline and played the ball across the goal mouth to a waiting Mondaini, who tapped it past Timbers goalkeeper Troy Perkins at the 70th minute.
· Midfielder Blair Gavin returned with the Red-and-White after recuperating from a hamstring injury and played the last three minutes of the match. Gavin’s last game was on 3/26 against the Colorado Rapids. Paulo Nagamura also returned to the starting lineup after recovering from a left calf strain injury and contributed with an assist in the goal.
Chivas USA was missing two players serving international duty, Andrew Boyens and Alejandro Moreno.
Chivas USA Head Coach Robin Fraser about tonight’s match: “A 1-0 victory seems like not that big of a deal, but the way we went about it, I was really proud. We put ourselves into dangerous positions often that we could’ve scored maybe a goal or two more, but I just felt like our mindset was right, and that’s the way it has to be.”
The Red-and-White will return to training on Tuesday ahead of Saturday’s match at Houston. Chivas USA Reserves will face the Portland Timbers Reserves on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. PT at The Home Depot Center’s Track & Field in a Reserve League game.
