COSMOS ACADEMY WEST IS NOW PART OF CHIVAS USA’S EXPANDING PROGRAM: Chivas USA announced last week the merger between the Red-and-White organization and the Cosmos Academy West. In light of the recent merge, Chivas USA would like to extend a warm welcome to the staff, players and families of Cosmos Academy West. Chivas USA recognizes that Cosmos Academy West has been one of the premier youth academies in Southern California and is excited with this recent announcement. As a result of this merge, Chivas USA will be expanding the scope of its academy program to include under 9 through under 18 academy teams. Chivas USA, true to the philosophies of Chivas Guadalajara in Mexico, is committed to player development as an integral component to success of the club on and off the field. There will be more announcements to come in the next couple of days.
CHIVAS USA COME AWAY WITH A POINT IN SEATTLE: In a stadium set just south of historic Pioneer Square, where the average attendance is 37,265, and the green of the grass blends with the green of the fans’ shirts, the Red-and-White faced and tied 0-0 on the road against one of the top Western Conference teams: the Seattle Sounders. The third of Chivas USA’s five consecutive away games took place at CenturyLink Field, before 36,364 fans this past Saturday afternoon. The scoreless match did not reflect what happened on the field where both squads searched and generated many goal opportunities throughout the game, totaling 14shots (10 for the home team). In addition, the match marked the debut of Goat’s new acquisition, Brazilian defender David Jr. Lopes who entered the match at the 73rd minute in substitution of Zarek Valentin. A penalty kick was charged against the Red-and-White at the 18th minute of the first half because of a handball inside the box by defender Michael Umaña. Seattle Sounder’s midfielder Alvaro Fernandez cashed the PK with a shot that hit Kennedy’s right post. The Chivas USA GK pushed the penalty redound out for a corner kick and the score remained 0-0. Dan Kennedy deserves a special mention. His timing, skills, and determination saved the Goats in two different occasions when Sounder’s forwards got close to score. In the second period, Sounder’ midfielder Erik Friberg shot a long distance strike which was deflected; Kennedy stretched to his left side and pushed the ball out at the 50th minute. Once again, at the 77th minute, Alvaro Fernandez from the home team struck from close range but Kennedy blocked and saved the Goats. Chivas USA were also close to find the back of the net and put Seattle’s GK to the test in the 40th minute when forward Venezuelan Alejandro Moreno, in a fantasy play, flicked the ball to inside of the box in Nick LaBrocca’s path who faced Keller in a one-on-one; Sounders GK charged off his line and blocked the Goat’s #10 shot, deflecting it out to defender Scott who put the ball out of the zone.
FRANCISCO “PANCHITO” MENDOZA TIES CHIVAS USA APPEARANCE RECORD: Mendoza has now played in 123 games for Chivas USA, tying Jonathan Bornstein’s record and needing only one more game appearance to surpass and become the all time leader. “Panchito” Mendoza, the Mexican player with the most all-time Major League Soccer appearances, returned to Chivas USA this season after playing the past two years in Mexico. The fan favorite and Chivas USA original has now appeared in 12 matches this season, and passed Sacha Kljestan’s 114 appearances earlier this year.

CHIVAS USA ANNOUNCES UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP WITH PADRES CONTRA EL CANCER: Chivas USA announced last month an in-depth partnership with PADRES Contra El Cancer, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Latino families with children who suffer from cancer and blood disorders. The mission-driven relationship will support PADRES and include fundraising and awareness campaigns that will engage Chivas USA team members, the team’s own non-profit Fundacion Chivas de Corazon USA, as well as link elements from Chivas USA’s sister-team Club Deportivo Chivas de Guadalajara. Jimmy Conrad and Mariano Trujillo got things started by visiting a group of children undergoing cancer treatment at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. The players also taped public service announcements aimed at creating awareness about the need for more individuals to join the national bone marrow registry list. Over the course of this summer, Chivas USA will designate part of the proceeds from the ticket sales from a number of home matches to benefit PADRES, all of which will culminate with a unique night scheduled for September. PEARCE PLAYS EVERY MINUTE: Defender Heath Pearce has played every minute so far this season, his first with Chivas USA. He has now started all twenty four games for the Red-and-White, playing a total of 2,160 minutes. Nick LaBrocca is the only other players to have started all twenty four games, but he has been substituted, leaving the 26-year old Pearce as the only Goat to play every possible minute thus far.
