CHIVAS USA WRAPS UP PORTLAND’S PRESEASON TOURNAMENT

WITH A LOSS AGAINST SAN JOSE

 

The Goats created five goal opportunities in 12 minutes but could not score once

 

·         PORTLAND, OR (Sunday, March 4, 2012) – Chivas USA wrapped up its participation in the Portland’s one-week three-game tournament with a 0-5 loss against its MLS Western Conference rival San Jose Earthquakes. The match took place at the JELD-WEN Field this Sunday.

 

·         The first goal opportunity for Chivas USA came in the 6th minute when Jorge Villafaña, attacking from the left side of the pitch, passed to Laurent Courtois who crossed to Colombian Juan Pablo Angel whose shot was deflected to a corner kick by San Jose’s defender and captain Ramiro Corrales. Courtois cashed the corner and placed the ball inside the box, where Red-and-White’s forward Casey Townsend was close to score with a header but Earthquakes’ defender Ike Opara cleaned the area.

 

·         In the 7th minute, Townsend faced Earthquakes’ GK John Busch on a one-on-one but Busch blocked and controlled the ball to take away Casey’s goal opportunity. Five minutes later, Juan Pablo Angel received and controlled the ball, headed it to Townsend who immediately shot, but San Jose’s goalkeeper was attentive and deflected the ball for a corner kick. In the 14th minute, defender Jorge Villafaña coming from the left side, crossed and placed the ball in Earthquakes’ box where Angel headed and barely missed the right post.

 

·         The Red-and-White insisted and in the 18th minute, midfielder Laurent Courtois took a free kick and placed the ball in San Jose’s box where forward Chris Wondolowski cleared the ball.

 

·         The 0-1 came in the 27th minute through San Jose’s forward Chris Wondolowski, who attacked from the left side, entered the box assisted by Shea Salinas, and with a left-footed shot, beat Dan Kennedy who dove to his left but the ball when to the back of the net.

 

·         San Jose scored four more goals in the second half of the match. In the 52nd minute, Salinas on a corner kick placed the ball to the second post where midfielder Marvin Chavez deflected, Ramiro Corrales with a header found defender Justin Morrow who headed the ball inside Kennedy’s net for the 0-2 in favor of the Earthquakes.

 

·         In the 75th minute, Goat’s midfielder Ryan Smith created a new goal opportunity for the Red-and-White and placed the ball into the box where Goat’s defender Rauwshan McKenzie headed and sent the ball right above San Jose’s crossbar.

 

·         Five minutes later, Earthquakes’ midfielder Tressor Moreno received and controlled a pass from Corrales and beat GK Kennedy for the 0-3 in the 80th minute.

 

·         San Jose’s forward Sercan Guvenisik was in charge of the 0-4. Attacking from the middle of the pitch and assisted by Tressor Moreno, the Turkish struck to Kennedy’s right post taking advantage of his opportunity and placing the ball in the net in the 84th minute.

 

·         The final goal came in the 88th minute from midfielder Sam Garza, assisted by Guvenisik. Garza attacked from the middle of the pitch as he received a pass, control and struck it to beat Chivas USA’s GK Kennedy and place the score 0-5 in favor of San Jose.

 

·         The Goats now return home to Los Angeles for their season opener. First Kick 2012 presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods will be Red-and-White’s official kick-off of the 2012 MLS season this following Sunday, March 11 at the Home Depot Center, when they square off against 2011 MLS Cup runner up, Houston Dynamo.
