Chivas USA (4-6-1) defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy (3-6-2), 1-0, in the first leg of the SuperClásico on a Jose Correa penalty kick in the 72nd minute before a sold-out Home Depot Center crowd of 18,800 Saturday night. The Red-and-White earned their first points at home and now have 13 points on the season.
Agudelo and Califf Join Red-and-White
Last Thursday was a busy day for Chivas USA, as the team announced two major trades. Colombian-born US international Juan Agudelo joined the team in a swap with the New York Red Bulls. Chivas USA sent defender Heath Pearce and allocation money to New York in exchange for the exciting 19-year-old forward. Veteran defender Danny Califf also joined Chivas USA on Thursday, acquired in a trade for Michael Lahoud and allocation money. Califf, a native of Southern California, began his MLS career in 2000 and enjoyed successful stints with the LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes before spending 4 years abroad in the Danish Superliga. Both Califf and Agudelo started last Saturday’s SuperClásico match against the Galaxy, with Agudelo playing 76 minutes and Califf going the distance on his way to being named MLSSoccer.com’s Man of the Match.
Correa Continues Hot Streak
Chivas USA forward José Erik Correa continued his exciting run for the Red-and-White on Saturday, scoring his second goal in as many matches. After scoring in his first start on May 13th, Correa was rewarded with another start in Saturday’s SuperClásico against the LA Galaxy. The 19-year-old Colombian made the most of his opportunity, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory for Chivas USA. Former Chivas USA defender David Junior Lopes saw red for the Galaxy in the 70th minute, using his arm to block a sure Correa goal off the line. The young Colombian stepped up to take the resultant penalty against Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Perk. He scored his first attempt, but had to try again as referee Mark Geiger blew his whistle for encroachment. The 19-year-old Correa calmly stepped up again however, and buried his second attempt past Perk for the game winning goal.
• Top 5 in MLS: Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy in currently battling for the league lead in a variety of statistical categories. Most notably, Kennedy is 3rd in saves with 42.
