Chivas USA Post-Match Quotes: (2-1 Win vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC, The Home Depot Center, Carson, Calif., 3/30/2013)

CHIVAS USA HEAD COACH JOSE LUIS SANCHEZ SOLA “CHELIS”

Thoughts on team’s performance: “Much better. In the last match we just completed 145 passes. Today, I don’t have the statistics yet, but we surpassed that by a lot. We had more ball possession. We dared to play the ball, and no better week than this one to continue to progress. The team that wants to beat us either here or away has to run more than us. If they don’t run more than us, then we’ve secured a point. Because as much as these players run and fight, that point is already guaranteed. Today we played good soccer or better than we’ve played the first four games. We had ball possession and created goal plays that were well accompanied by the players. The second goal was a thing of beauty.”

On injured players: “The way we play is very dangerous, with regards to yellow cards and injuries. We play to win and we have to react in tenths of a second. The two injuries from today are muscular, because of the way we play. The good thing is that I don’t have a game next week and I have more time enjoy this one.”

Thoughts on team being a contender: “My team is made for every week. I want to look at the cup half full. How long it’s going to last, I don’t know. But I want to see the glass half full. Surprise or no surprise, Chivas exists.”

CHIVAS USA MIDFIELDER ERIC AVILA

Thoughts on the match: “We came out strong in the first half. We had all the energy and luckily we pressed and we got the first goal”

Thoughts on his goal: “[Jorge] Villafaña was going down on the left side, like he always does, and I have to be there on the back post. The whole play was building, he got a cross and I had a one-time shot.”

On team’s four-game unbeaten streak: “We try not to think about that, we try to just think about the next game. We’re done with this game and now let’s focus on the next game. We are not thinking about anything else.”

CHIVAS USA MIDFIELDER CARLOS ALVAREZ

Thoughts on the match: “The team played really well. They gave more than one hundred percent. We played as a team and that’s why we got the victory.”

Thoughts on the own-goal: “I had an open shot and I took it. It got deflected and it was fortunate enough to get in. I’m thankful that it went in and I’m just happy for the team.”

On team’s four-game unbeaten streak: “We keep working hard as a team and if we continue, we’ll be fine”

VANCOUVER HEAD COACH MARTIN RENNIE

Thoughts on the match: “We missed too many opportunities today, at the same time we did not defend the second ball well and twice it cost us both goals. I’m really frustrated about that – too many players had an off-night tonight. To get that many more chances than the opposition away from home and to only score one goal is something we need to improve on.”

Thoughts on team’s performance: “On the positive side, we were creating chances which I’m happy about and possessed the ball reasonably well. There was good pressure on us today and we managed to get out of that, especially as the game wore on. There is a lot to build on.”

Turning the game around: “I think after we lost the first goal we played well and we had a couple of good chances. To come out of it with a defeat is very frustrating, but it is something we can learn and build from. We need to do that correctly. We have a lot of talent and good players – that is evident. The game is about scoring goals and making sure you put a goal in the net and of course making sure that the other team does not.”

VANCOUVER MIDFIELDER NIGEL REO-COKER

Thoughts on the match: “At the start of the game we know that, as a team, we didn’t play the game well. In the second half we picked up, but again it’s very similar to last week. We’ve been a better team in both away games we’ve played, but we haven’t got the result that we deserve.”

Positives from the game: “We’re creating chances. That’s a big positive, and we’re playing well. We just haven’t gotten the result. Now, I think it’s a different situation if you’re not creating chances and you’re not playing well away from home, but we’re playing very well. We’re creating chances, but we’re just not taking them at this moment of time.”

On team’s performance on the road: “This league is demanding, but we can’t use that as an excuse at all. This is our job, our occupation, and I’m sure we’re only going to get stronger and better as the season goes on.”

VANCOUVER FORWARD KENNY MILLER

Thoughts on the match: “We certainly try to prepare ourselves as well as we can by trying to stay focused. But when you come into a game that is hard to pick-up the pace and you find yourself down two, it’s always going to be an upwards trouble. But if you look at the last half of the game we had a lot of good chances and by all accounts it’s a similar game to last week. We played well. We created a lot of chances and we ended up with one goal. So it’s pretty disappointing.”

Thoughts on team needing to bounce back: “The next few months, hopefully get some wins on the board. Again, we have two defeats now, so it’s up to us to go to San Jose next week and make sure we get it rights and get three points.”
