Chivas USA defeat Seattle Sounders FC 2-1 in Reserve League match
CARSON, Calif. (Sunday, June 2, 2013) – Led by two second-half goals, Chivas USA’s Reserves defeated Seattle Sounders FC’s Reserves, 2-1, Sunday morning at The Home Depot Center’s Field 4 in Chivas’ second Reserve League match of the season and fourth for the Sounders. The Rojiblancos were propelled by scores from Academy standout Caleb Calvert and Forward Tristan Bowen. Seattle would cut the lead in half on an own goal by center back Steven Purdy. With the win, the Red-and-White have a record of 2-0-0 in Reserves competition, while Seattle falls to a 1-2-1 record.
The sides came out in the first half and possessed well, as both clubs got into their attacking third in the fast-paced match. The Goats knocked on the door first with their first corner kick inside the first minute of play. Seattle answered back with a pair of strikes minutes later on rookie Eriq Zavaleta’s shot from the top of the box and then Shalrie Josephs’ attempt from behind the arc that was pushed wide left of the post.
Locked in a scoreless tie in the second half, the Red-and-White broke the ice in the 69th minute when midfielder Jose Manuel Rivera chipped a pass over the last Seattle defender as Calvert broke inside the box. The 16-year-old forward got on the end of the pass and headed the ball past Seattle goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann to give his side a 1-0 lead in his Reserves debut.
Chivas USA extended their lead in the 76th minute when Rivera initiated the build-up inside the Goats’ attacking third just outside the local’s goal. Rivera found Josué Soto on the left side of the box, who gathered the pass and sent a low cross through the box to a cutting Bowen. The Los Angeles native then one-timed it to the back of the net with his left-footed shot.
Seattle pulled back within one a minute when a played ball into the short area could not be cleared out cleanly by Purdy. The defender looked to head the ball out to deny the threat but instead put it past Chivas USA keeper Pat McLain to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
The visitors continued to push their numbers forward in search of the equalizer, as Sammy Ochoa looked to get on the end of a number of long balls over the top. Seattle also took a pair of corner kicks late in the second half but could not generate their second score, as McLain and the Red-and-White defense were stout inside the box. The Sounders had one last promising threat in the 86th minute when Marc Burch went deep into Chivas’ territory to bring down a pass over the top. However, McLain broke at the same time, coming way off his line to meet the defender with a collision to preserve the 2-1 victory.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC will be Chivas USA and Seattle Sounders FC’s next opponent in Reserve League competition at Vancouver. The Red-and-White will face the Canadian side on Wednesday, June 5 at 11 a.m. (PT), while Seattle will visit them on July 7.
