Chivas USA fall 2-0 at home to Seattle Sounders FC

CARSON, Calif. (Saturday, June 1, 2013) – Chivas USA (3-8-2) fell Saturday night, 2-0, to Western Conference rival Seattle Sounders FC (5-4-3) at The Home Depot Center. Seattle was led by Obameni Martins’ first-half goal and was aided by a Chivas USA own goal to record the road win. Forward Lamar Neagle recorded an assist on the score.

The Red-and-White possessed well throughout the first half and were able to get a number of quality looks at goal. In the 14th minute, midfielder Jorge Villafaña worked the ball on the left wing and got off a strike, but the attempt sailed wide left. Two minutes later, midfielder Oswaldo Minda threaded a pass to forward Jose Correa as the Colombian striker crossed the 18-yard line. With a defender battling from behind, Correa could not get enough on the shot and Seattle keeper Michael Gspurning was able gather the attempt.

Seattle went up a goal in the 22nd minute when Neagle played a quick pass he received from Mario Martinez to a streaking Martins down the left seam. The Forward worked the ball into the box and chipped his fourth goal of the season over Red-and-White goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

Playing a goal down, the Rojiblancos continued to get into dangerous spots in their attacking third and took a pair of corner kicks in the first half. In the 26th minute midfielder Carlos Alvarez sent in a corner kick from the right side where center back Joaquin Velazquez’s header was on frame but controlled by Gspurning. Three minutes later, Alvarez again was on the distributing end of a Chivas USA set piece, as he played a ball into the box that was headed out of bounds by center back Bobby Burling.

The visitors extended their lead to 2-0 in the 33rd minute when midfielder Mauro Rosales sent a cross into the box from the right side which defender Mario de Luna could not clear out cleanly, as his header attempt found the back of Chivas USA’s net for the own goal.

The Red-and-White looked to their bench to provide an offensive spark in the second half, bringing a pair of attacking players into the match in the 61st and 70th minutes with Miller Bolaños and Tristan Bowen, respectively. Both players got into range upon entering the match and got off shots on goal.

Bowen had a pair of quality strikes from the right side of the box for the Goats. In the 74th minute the Los Angeles native got deep into the right side of the box and got off a shot near the end line but was denied. The forward got off his best shot of the night in the 89th minute when his right-footed strike from the right wing was on frame and headed inside the far post, but Gspurning again got a hand on the ball to keep the clean sheet intact for the night.

Chivas USA have the next two weekends off from MLS play, as they turn their attention to facing the Carolina RailHawks in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in Cary, N.C. on June 12 starting at 4:15 p.m. (PT).
