Al ingresar al capítulo 29 en la historia del SuperClásico contra su vecino rival el LA Galaxy este domingo por la noche, Chivas USA buscará seguir mejorando su empate a uno del pasado marzo. El Rebaño Angelino logró sacar el resultado jugando como visitante mientras se encontraba con un hombre menos en la cancha desde el minuto 40, cuando el zaguero Joaquín Velázquez fue expulsado al recibir una tarjeta roja, que días después fue rescindida por un comité independiente. El joven mediocampista Carlos Álvarez ingresó al partido para proveer un ataque ofensivo aún más fuerte, y fue exactamente eso lo que hizo el nativo del Este de Los Ángeles.

Álvarez se conectó con su compañero californiano, Carlos Borja, cuando al minuto 89 el defensa cruzó el balón desde el lado derecho dentro del área hacia Álvarez que se ubicaba cerca del poste izquierdo listo para el remate. Con el gol, el delantero aseguraba el primer punto en la edición del SuperClásico en el 2013. El empate dramático sumó aún otro capítulo en la historia de la rivalidad que inició en el 2005 durante la temporada inaugural de Chivas USA en la Major League Soccer. Desde su comienzo, el clásico angelino ha visto altibajos para ambas escuadras, y fue en el 2009 que este clásico llegó a su punto máximo al enfrentar a los dos vecinos en la Liguilla de ese año. Entre el 2006 y 2008, los Rojiblancos disfrutaron de sus mejores resultados en el SuperClásico al salir con puntos en siete de los 11 encuentros en esa etapa.

Desde su choque en la Liguilla del 2009, choque que ganó el Galaxy por un resultado añadido de 3-2 para avanzar a la siguiente ronda, el clásico ha favorecido a Los Angeles, ya que los campeones de la temporada pasada se llevaron la serie en el 2012. Al encontrarse con una victoria cada uno, las escuadras se enfrentaron en el tercer y decisivo partido en agosto, la cual ganó el Galaxy para quedarse con el trofeo. Al iniciar la edición número 27 en duelos de la temporada regular con un empate ya asegurado, si el Rebaño logra vencer como local el domingo, tendrán seguro poder como poco empatar la serie de este año.

El SuperClásico ha visto el debut de varios jugadores, así como el Directores Técnicos. La edición del domingo, programada para las 8 p.m. (PT) en el StubHub Center, no será diferente, ya que el nuevo pastor del Rebaño Angelino José Luis “Güero” Real y su asistente técnico Marco Fabián harán su debut no sólo en el SuperClásico pero también en casa.

Para muchos integrantes del Rebaño en su primer año con la MLS, pudieron sentir y disputar por primera vez el clásico en marzo, excepto el defensa Walter Vílchez y los mediocampistas Gabriel Farfán y Aarón Ponce. El Peruano Vilchez sufrió una lesión la semana anterior al duelo en marzo y estuvo fuera de actividad por varias semanas. Para Farfán y Ponce, si llegan a participar el domingo, será su primera experiencia en el clásico, ya que ambos se sumaron al cuadro rojiblanco en mayo – Ponce a préstamo del club hermano Chivas Guadalajara y Farfán en un intercambio con Philadelphia Union. Las adquisiciones le han dado aún más opciones entre los elementos de la media cancha a los Rojiblancos de cara al choque ante un Galaxy que ha perdido dos de sus últimos tres encuentros por un marcador total de 8-1.

No habrá sentimientos encontrados para Bowen

En las últimas temporadas, la plantilla de Chivas USA contaba con varios jugadores provenientes del LA Galaxy. Esta temporada, solamente queda uno: Tristan Bowen. Mientras que Chivas USA continúa preparándose para el segundo SuperClásico de la temporada, el delantero rojiblanco da su punto de vista tras jugar con ambos clubes.

Tristan Bowen firmó con él LA Galaxy como el primer jugador salido de las Fuerzas Básicas en noviembre del 2008. Desde su anuncio, Bowen pasó a jugar 18 partidos antes de verse en un intercambio con Chivas USA a finales del 2010. Bowen también pasó un tiempo jugando en Bélgica antes de regresar al equipo rojiblanco, pero previo al partido de este domingo, el oriundo de Van Nuys no ha jugado ante su ex equipo, algo que no cambiará el significado del partido de este domingo.

“No hay sentimientos encontrados”, Bowen dijo sobre el SuperClásico. “Creo que cuando me intercambiaron, estaba un poco emocionado por el partido, pero creo que al pasar los años, es otro partido más. Aún tengo buenos amigos en el otro vestidor y va a ser divertido salir y competir ante ellos, pero personalmente, es otro partido más.

“Todos somos profesionales, todos tenemos que superar todo, pero el domingo, voy a enfrentar el partido como si hablásemos de otro partido más y solamente quiero ganar”, Bowen añadió.

Aunque Bowen diga que el SuperClásico de este domingo ante el LA Galaxy en el StubHub Center será otro partido más, él y el resto del Rebaño Angelino tienen solamente un objetivo en mente, y ese es revertir la racha actual y empezar a sumar puntos para buscar un lugar en la Liguilla.

“Creo que para nosotros ahorita, lo más importante es sumar puntos. Estamos en un punto de la temporada donde eso es crucial, y estamos listos para salir adelante como club. Necesitamos luchar para poder entrar a la Liguilla y no podemos gastar más tiempo. La mayoría de la gente no espera que ganemos este partido, o ni siquiera sumemos puntos, pero nosotros ya lo tenemos en mente, necesitamos luchar para eso y empezar a cambiar la situación”, Bowen finalizó.

Villafaña conoce bien la historia

Como el jugador con más participación en Chivas USA, quizás nadie conoce mejor la magnitud del SuperClásico que Jorge Villafaña. El mediocampista ha visto los altibajos en la tabla desde su llegada al club en el 2007, y ha disputado la rivalidad a su máximo nivel. El californiano se integró al Rebaño Angelino en el tercer año de la franquicia y arribó cuando el club se comenzaba a establecer como uno de los líderes en la Conferencia del Oeste. Además, el zurdo también ha disputado varios duelos contra su rival vecino, y al enfrentarse en el capítulo 29 en la historia de la serie, acertó que la emoción será grande, tanto como la primera vez.

El 2007 marcó la primera vez que los Rojiblancos lograron llegar a la Postemporada, y en los siguientes años se estableció como uno de los clubes más exitosos en la Liga, algo que Villafaña recuerda. En el 2009, encabezados por 13 victorias y seis empates, la escuadra rojiblanca de nuevo llegó a la Liguilla y se enfrentándose a Galaxy en partido de ida y vuelta en la primera ronda. A pesar de caer ante su rival, Villafaña comentó que la importancia del SuperClásico creció aún más con ese duelo.

“Un SuperClásico es algo que todos quieren jugar”, comentó Villafaña. “Pero imagínate al ser en la Liguilla. Creo que esos partidos se tienen que jugar a muerte. La adrenalina corre, se tiene que ganar y no hay vuelta atrás”.

Después de empatar a dos en el partido de ida, el Galaxy tomó la ventaja global al ganar en el partido de vuelta por la mínima diferencia para avanzar a la siguiente ronda, y desde entonces, el historial se ha inclinado hacia su favor. Al encontrarse con una victoria cada club, Los Ángeles se llevó la serie del año pasado con su segunda victoria. En el primer capítulo de esta campaña, el Rebaño sacó un empate muy merecido cuando se encontraba con un jugador menos para empatar al minuto 89 como visitante. Contando con esos cuantos resultados positivos y la llegada del nuevo pastor del Rebaño, José Luis Real, Villafaña sabe que con esos elementos se puede comenzar a construir el cuadro de cara al partido del domingo y más allá.

“Los primeros años que yo llegué al club estaba en los lugares altos de la tabla y se disputaban partidos en la postemporada”, recordó Villafaña. “Lo recuerdo y es algo muy emocionante y a eso se está trabajando ahorita para llegar en los lugares de arriba. Y ahora con el “Guero” [Real] el equipo está tomando identidad y se está notando la diferencia. Se lleva tiempo pero creo que sí se puede. Es un muy buen entrenador y que bueno sería sacar este resultado contra el Galaxy, porque nos daría un nivel de confianza grande. Ya en este partido se olvidan los demás porque es algo diferente y estamos confiados”.

Rojiblanco internacional: Morales en la Copa Mundial

El delantero de Chivas USA Julio Morales vio desde la banca el primer partido de la Selección Sub-20 de México ante su similar de Grecia dentro de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA de su categoría disputado en Turquía. Los mexicanos no pudieron obtener sus primeros puntos de la competencia tras caer 2-1 ante Grecia.

Ya en el minuto 12, Grecia se iba arriba en el marcador tras un gol de Andreas Bouchalakis a pesar del dominio de la escuadra mexicana. Cerca de terminarse el primer tiempo, los mexicanos empataron el partido tras un golazo de Jonathan Espericueta vía tiro libre en el minuto 40. Al regresar a la segunda parte, El Tri juvenil tuvo la mayoría de oportunidades a gol.

La más clara para los mexicanos vino al minuto 75 cuando Espericueta se encontraba sólo frente al arco, pero el. cabeceo se fue por arriba del travesaño. A dos minutos de que terminara el partido, Dimitris Kolovos anotó otro golazo tras derrotar a la defensa mexicana para el 2-1 final.

Los mexicanos ahora tendrán que prepararse para su próximo rival en la fase de grupos y buscar sus primeros puntos enfrentando a la Selección de Paraguay, partido programado para el martes, 25 de junio de nuevo en el Estadio Kamil Ocak en Gaziantep, Turquía.

SuperClásico Still Provides New Excitement

As the Rojiblancos enter their 29th all-time meeting against their cross-hall rival the LA Galaxy Sunday night, they will look to build on their recent 1-1 draw in the first leg of this year’s SuperClásico. The Red-and-White earned the hard-fought result as the visiting side in mid-March after having to play a man down for the match’s final 50 minutes after center back Joaquin Velázquez was shown a red card – which an independent review panel later rescinded. Rookie midfielder Carlos Alvárez was brought on in the second half to provide an offensive spark and that’s exactly what the East Los Angeles product did.

Alvárez linked up with another Southern California product, Carlos Borja, in the 89th minute, as the defender crossed a pass from the right side of the box to a cutting Alvárez near the far post for the tap-in, securing the series’ first point. The come-from-behind result was yet another chapter added to the SuperClásico history, as the clubs first squared off in 2005 during Chivas USA’s inaugural season in Major League Soccer. Since then, the cross-hall rivalry has seen peaks and valleys for both sides, and reached its maximum momentum in 2009 when Chivas and the Galaxy faced each other in the first round of that year’s MLS Playoffs. From 2006 through 2008, the Red-and-White enjoyed arguably their best run in the rivalry, as they came away with results in seven of their 11 head-to-head meetings against LA.

Since their post-season meeting in 2009, which the Galaxy took by a 3-2 global score to advance past the first round, the SuperClásico has favored LA, as the defending champs most recently took last year’s series by winning two out of three. The sides entered the deciding game of the 2012 series last August in the third leg with a win apiece and LA came out victorious to secure the trophy. Should the Rebaño Angelino take Sundays’ 27th all-time regular-season meeting, the Goats would be assured at least a split in this year’s edition.

The SuperClásico has seen many debuts throughout the years, and Sunday will be no different, as newly-appointed Chivas USA Head Coach José Luis “Güero” Real and Assistant Coach Marco Fabián will be making his SuperClásico and home debut when the match kicks off at 8 p.m. (PT) at the StubHub Center.

For many of the Rojiblancos’ first-year players, they got their first taste of the rivalry back in March, except for defender Walter Vílchez and midfielders Gabriel Farfán and Aarón Ponce. Vílchez missed the first leg when he suffered a knee injury the week before in a 3-1 win at home against FC Dallas. For Farfán and Ponce, should they see action in the derby, it will be their debut as well, as the duo were acquired by Chivas USA in May – Ponce on loan from brother club Chivas Guadalajara and Farfán via trade from Philadelphia Union. These two additions have given the Red-and-White added depth in the midfield heading into Sunday against a Galaxy squad that has lost two of their last three League matches by a combined score of 8-1.

No Mixed Feelings for Bowen

In previous seasons, Chivas USA counted with a couple of players from the LA Galaxy on their roster. This season, it has come down to one: Tristan Bowen. As Chivas USA continue their preparations for the second SuperClásico of the season, the Red-and-White forward gives his perspective on what it’s like to play for both clubs.

Tristan Bowen was signed onto the LA Galaxy as the team’s first Homegrown player back in November of 2008. He would go on to play 18 games with the cross-hall rivals before being traded to Chivas USA in late 2010. Bowen spent time abroad playing in Belgium before returning to the Red-and-White, but previous to this Sunday’s game, the Van Nuys native has not yet played against his old club, something that won’t change the meaning of Sunday’s game.

“There are no mixed feelings,” said Bowen on the SuperClásico. “I think when I first was traded, I was a little bit excited for the match, and I think over the years, it’s just another match. I still have a lot of good friends in the other locker room, and it’s going to be fun to go out there and compete against them but for me personally, it’s just another match.

“Everyone is a professional, everyone has to move on but on Sunday, I’m going to approach it as any other game and I just want to win,” Bowen added.

Even though Bowen says that this Sunday’s SuperClásico against the LA Galaxy at the StubHub Center will be just another game, for him and the rest of the Goats, they have one objective, and that’s revert the current streak and start earning points for a spot in the Playoffs.

“I think for us right now, the most important thing is to start picking up points. We’re at a point in our season where that’s crucial and we’re ready to move forward as a club. We need to make a push for the Playoffs and we can’t put it off another game. Most people probably don’t expect us to win this [game] or even get points, but within ourselves, we have to push for that and start turning things around,” Bowen finalized.

Villafaña Knows the History

As a senior member on Chivas USA’s team, perhaps no one knows the magnitude of the SuperClásico better than Jorge Villafaña. The midfielder has seen the ups and downs the Red-and-White have gone through in the standings since his arrival to the club in 2007 and has seen the rivalry at its highest of levels. The Southern California product joined Chivas USA in the franchise’s third year in Major League Soccer and arrived at a time where the Rojiblancos were becoming one of the League’s winningest clubs. Along with that, the winger has competed in several installments of the SuperClásico, and this Sunday’s 29th all-time meeting between the cross-hall rivals will be just as exciting as his first, he says.

2007 marked the first time the Rojiblancos reached the post-season and in the following years became one of the front-runners in the Western Conference, something Villafaña indeed remembers. In 2009, Chivas USA recorded 13 wins to go along with six ties to propel them into the post-season, and squared off against the Galaxy in the two-game playoff series. Though the Goats fell short of advancing, Villafaña says that the rivalry was taken up a notch even more with that battle.

“A SuperClásico is something that everyone wants to play in,” Villafaña said. “But just imagine how greater it is as a Playoff match. In games like that you have to leave it all out on the field. Your adrenaline is running and you have to win – no turning back.”

After the sides played to a thrilling 2-2 tie, the Galaxy took the series with a 1-0 victory in the second leg, and since then, have taken a one-sided advantage in the rivalry. The Goats lost last year’s season series in the final leg, as the sides entered the match with a win apiece. In this season’s first installment, the Red-and-White battled back playing a man down to secure a 1-1 tie. With the combination of a couple recent positive results against their cross-hall rival to go along with the arrival of new Head Coach José Luis Real, Villafaña knows that those are points the club can build on heading into Sunday’s match and beyond.

“When I first arrived the club was one of the conference leaders and we competed in playoff matches,” Villafaña recalled. “I remember it well and it is something very exciting and that’s what we are working on to reach that level. And now with [Real], the team is taking shape and developing and the difference is noticeable. It takes time, but I think it can be done. He’s a very good coach and what better than to get a result against the Galaxy to give us a huge boost in confidence. In these matches you forget about the past because they are unique and we come into the match confident.”

International Goat: Morales in the World Cup

Chivas USA forward Julio Morales was on bench for Mexico’s U20 National Team’s first match against the youth ranks of Greece in the 2013 U-20 FIFA World Cup held in Turkey. The Mexicans were unable to earn their first points in the tournament as they fell 2-1 to Greece.

As early as the 12th minute of the match, Greece went up in the scoreboard after a goal by Andreas Bouchalakis, despite the dominance of the Mexican squad. Minutes before the end of the first half, the Mexicans were able to equalize after a great goal by Jonathan Espericueta via free kick in the 40th minute of the match. The young ranks of El Tri returned to the second half with the majority of chances at goal.

The clearest opportunity for the Mexicans came in the 75th minute when Expericueta found himself alone in front of the goal, headed the ball, but the header went way above the crossbar. Two minutes before the end of the match, Dimitris Kolovos notched a great goal after defeating the Mexican back line for the final 2-1 score.
