Chivas USA Hand Real First Point in 1-1 Tie with NE Revolution

CARSON, Calif. (Saturday, June 29, 2013) – Chivas USA (3-10-3) played the New England Revolution (5-5-6) to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at the StubHub Center in the sides’ first and only meeting of the season. The Rojiblancos went ahead in the first half on midfielder Laurent Courtois’ first goal of the season, but the Revs responded with a late goal by Chad Barrett. With the tie, Chivas USA Head Coach José Luis Real recorded his first point at home and broke the team’s current losing streak.

The Rojiblancos took the 1-0 advantage in the 18th minute when forward Tristan Bowen controlled a loose ball inside the arc and dished it off to Courtois, who unleashed his left-footed strike from just outside the box and to the right of the arc to find the upper right corner of the net past a diving Bobby Shuttleworth.

Playing a goal up, the Red-and-White continued to push their attack forward and were close to adding a second score, as Courtois tried to return the favor to Bowen in the 34th minute. The midfielder got around a Revs defender with a solo play outside the right side of the box and sent a cross to Bowen, who gathered the ball near the penalty mark with his back to the net, turned and fired, but the shot traveled wide right of the post. The Goats continued to pepper New England’s goal as Courtois got off shots from nearly the same spot just outside the box in the 38th and 39th minute.

In the 48th minute Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy made a diving save to his left on a shot that was sent from the left side of the box and on frame to preserve the one-goal advantage. Kennedy again was stout in the 64th minute when Kelyn Rowe worked the ball down the center of the attacking third and dropped it off to Diego Fagundez on his left, who one-timed his shot, but the attempt was denied as Kennedy controlled the shot.

A minute later, the Rojiblancos found themselves on New England’s doorstep off a corner kick. As the ball was played into the short area, midfielder Gabriel Farfan got off a header that was on frame, but a leaping save by Shuttleworth was able to keep the match at one-nil.

The Revs evened the match in the 88th minute when Fagundez sent a long cross from the right seam to the far post where Barrett was able to get a touch on the pass and the ball rattled passed the goal line, as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Chivas USA will have a short week as they now hit the road for a three-game road trip that will kick off with a Fourth of July match at FC Dallas beginning at 6 p.m. (PT) at FC Dallas Stadium. The match will be the second of three meetings between the Western Conference opponents this season and can be heard in Spanish on W Radio 690 AM.
