Chivas USA Round Out Jose Luis Real’s Coaching Staff with Othoniel Gonzalez, Claine Plummer & Armando Camacho
CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, July 9, 2013) – Chivas USA today announced the additions of Assistant Coach Othoniel Gonzalez Jr., Goalkeeper Coach Claine Plummer and Strength and Conditioning Coach Armando Camacho to Red-and-White Head Coach Jose Luis Real’s staff.
Gonzalez joins Chivas USA after serving as head coach for the men’s program at UC Riverside since 2004. His stint as a member of the Highlander’s staff began in 2001 with the re-birth of the program.
During his tenure at UCR, Gonzalez revitalized the program and set all-time highs in wins (nine) during the 2011 season, leading the Highlanders to their first-ever appearance in the Big West Conference Tournament. In 2012, Gonzalez led UCR to yet another all-time high in wins with 10 and a No. 19 national ranking. Gonzalez was twice named Big West Coach of the Year.
A graduate of Rancho Cucamonga High in 1995 where earned All-League honors, Gonzalez went on to a stellar playing career at UCLA as a midfielder under legendary Head Coach Sigi Schmid. The duo helped lead the Bruins to three Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships and the NCAA National Championship in 1997. Gonzalez graduated in 2000 with a degree in history.
After completing his collegiate career, the Pomona, Calif. native played for the San Diego Flash of the professional A-League as well as the Utah Blitz of the United Soccer League Third Division. In addition to his playing credentials, Gonzalez holds a United States Soccer Federation “A” license.
Plummer joins Chivas USA’s First Team as their goalkeeper coach after spending two and a half seasons with the Red-and-White Youth Academy. Before joining the Chivas USA institution, Plummer was the goalkeeper coach at his alma mater, California State University, Los Angeles, where he coached both the women’s and men’s teams since 2009.
From 2006-2008, Plummer served as goalkeeper coach for the UCLA women’s team. At the same time, he worked at Marshall Fundamental High School where he was named the San Gabriel Valley Coach of the Year.
Plummer, a native of Costa Rica, is a former All-California Collegiate Athletic Association player. He attended CSULA from 1994-1997 and currently holds the school’s second-best all-time career saves record with 248. In addition, Plummer also serves as the national goalkeeper coach for the National Soccer Coaches of America.
Camacho joins the Red-and-White as the team’s strength and conditioning Coach with extensive experience in his field. Before joining Chivas USA, Camacho was a member of brother club Chivas Guadalajara throughout his entire career as a player and a coach.
The Guadalajara native played professionally in Guadalajara’s Third and Second-Division squads as a defender from 1989 to 1990 before joining the First Team in 1990. After retiring as a player, Camacho pursued a career in strength and conditioning coaching. In 1996, Camacho was hired as Chivas Guadalajara’s strength and conditioning coach at the youth level, and in 2003, he was promoted to work with the First Team.
