Chivas USA Fall 3-1 at Philadelphia Union

CHESTER, Pa. (Friday, July 12, 2013) – Chivas USA (3-11-5) fell 3-1 Friday night to the Philadelphia Union at a rain-soaked PPL Park. The Rojiblancos took the initial lead on Jose Correa’s first-half score, but the home side responded with three unanswered goals in the second half by Brian Carroll, Michael Farfan and Conor Casey.

The Rojiblancos went up a goal in the 14th minute when Jorge Villafaña pounced on a turnover outside the edge of the left side of the box. The midfielder worked the ball into the box and drew Philadelphia goalkeeper Zac MacMath far off his line and played a cross to Correa, who was left unmarked on the penalty spot for the left-footed tap-in to take the 1-0 advantage.

Chivas USA goalkeeper and Captain Dan Kennedy was solid in goal as he denied Union midfielder Danny Cruz from inside the left side of the box in a one-on-one meeting in the 31st minute. Cruz received a pass from inside the arc and was left unmarked, forcing Kennedy to come off his line to turn away the threat and preserve the lead.

The Goats looked to get into dangerous spaces and extend their lead, as midfielder Gabriel Farfan – who was making his first appearance at PPL since being acquired by the Red-and-White in May via trade – worked the ball in the middle of the attacking third, created space for himself and unleashed a right-footed strike from about 25 yards out that was on frame. MacMath had to quickly bolt to his right to keep the shot from going in.

The home side equalized in the 58th minute when they played through a corner kick. Forward Sebastien Le Toux crossed the ball from outside the left edge of the box to Carroll, who deflected an initial header by Casey from the six-yard line inside the near post.

In the 60th minute, Villafaña looked to give the Red-and-White the lead back, as he worked the ball on the left wing with a defender battling him for possession, but the midfielder pushed his shot wide of the left post.

With the Rojiblancos playing a man down beginning in the 79th minute, Philadelphia would go on to pull away with two late scores. The Union were awarded an indirect kick from seven yards out after Josue Soto was sent off for his second yellow card, which Le Toux laid off to Farfan for his shot that found the top of the net over the defensive wall in the 82nd minute. Philadelphia put the finishing touch on the match seven minutes later when Casey got on the end of a Fabinho cross to put it past Kennedy for the 3-1 result.

Chivas USA return home after their three-game road trip and will host Toronto FC in a mid-week match at the StubHub Center on Wednesday, July 17, beginning at 7:30 p.m. (PT). The game will be the first and only meeting between the clubs during the 2013 campaign and can be heard in Spanish on W Radio 690 AM.
