Rojiblancos battle the Reds

Chivas USA enter their mid-week home match against Toronto FC having recently concluded a three-game, cross-country road trip, which included a brief stay in Montreal. The Red-and-White come into the match unbeaten in three of their last four matches and will be looking to deliver Head Coach Jose Luis Real’s first League win since taking over the Rebaño Angelino.

VIDEO: Preview Chivas USA vs. Toronto FC

Wednesday night’s match will mark Real’s third home game at the helm of Chivas, as they host a Toronto FC squad that is currently in next to last place in the Eastern Conference at 2-9-7. The Goats welcome the Reds for the sides’ only meeting this year and will look to remain undefeated at home when serving as host to the Canadian side.

In five all-time meetings in Carson, Chivas USA have outscored TFC 12-1 and will look to extend the all-time series advantage, which has favored the Goats convincingly at 8-2-1. The Red-and-White look poised to do so with the arrival of defender Carlos Bocanegra and forward Erick “Cubo” Torres, who will be eligible for selection in Wednesday’s match for Real’s squad.

READ: Avila welcomes familiar foe

Bocanegra was signed on July 1 while Torres arrived via loan from brother club Chivas Guadalajara on July 10, and both players joined the Red-and-White while in Philadelphia but did not see action in the final leg of the 10-day trip. The addition of Bocanegra, a two-time World Cup veteran to the backline, will further solidify Real’s defense, which helped the Goats come away with two draws on the trip.

The addition of Torres, 20, will bolster Real’s corps of forwards and will provide an added threat up top. The Guadalajara product made his professional debut at the age of 17 and tallied 14 goals for the Mexican club and will be looking to make his MLS debut should the former Guadalajara manager call upon him.

Wednesday’s match will feature two teams hungry to get back into the win column and who have gotten very familiar with one another on the trade front over the years. Chivas recently acquired TFC’s first spot in the allocation ranking in exchange for a 2015 natural first-round pick and an international roster spot, which opened the door for the Rojiblancos to acquire Bocanegra. The Southern California product was drafted in 2000 by the Chicago Fire and is now making his MLS return after spending nearly a decade in European soccer.

Current and former Chivas USA players have suited up for both sides, including midfielder Eric Avila, who spent last season with the Reds before returning to his native SoCal. TFC forward Justin Braun played four seasons with the Goats, appearing in 96 matches from 2008-2011.

Gold Cup: Purdy & El Salvador advance to Quarterfinals

Chivas USA defender Steve Purdy and El Salvador’s National Team earned a spot in the Quarterfinal Round of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup on Monday night at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. La Selecta was able to advance to the next round after defeating Haiti’s National Team 1-0. Purdy did not see action in the team’s last match of the group phase.
Rodolfo Zelaya’s lone goal in the 78th minute of the match lifted El Salvador to their first victory of the tournament. After the three games in the group stage, El Salvador finished with a 1-1-1 record and boosted up to the third spot of the group to earn a berth in the Quarterfinal Round.

So far in the tournament, Purdy has played 88 minutes in a 2-2 draw with Trinidad & Tobago, before being subbed out in the 88th minute due to some hits he received to his ribs. Purdy is now recovered and ready to continue helping his team make it to the Championship match.

“I’m feeling good. I took a couple of whacks in the first game, but I’m at 100% and ready for when Coach [Agustin Castillo] needs me in the game,” Purdy told cdchivasusa.com over the phone on Tuesday afternoon.

El Salvador will wait for their next rival pending on the results of Group C action. It will be then that La Selecta will head to either Georgia Dome in Atlanta or M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore for their next match.

Training Report: Finishing touches

Chivas USA held their second and last training session ahead of their match against Toronto FC on Tuesday morning at the StubHub Center. On Wednesday, the Goats will host Toronto FC in their only game at home in the month of July.

The Red-and-White kicked off at 8:30 a.m. studying a video of the opponent. Half an hour later, the group jumped into action at Field Six of the StubHub Center. The team began with a light jog around the field and then continued with mobility exercises to wake up the body.

Working in two separate groups, the Red-and-White participated in a ball possession exercise for around 20 minutes, in which the players demonstrated their high level of competition. After the exercise, that helped increase ball possession and touches, Güero Real held an inter squad scrimmage for the remaining part of the hour and a half training, focusing primarily on set plays.

Chivas USA play host to Toronto FC this Wednesday at 7:30 pm (PT) at the StubHub Center as part of Major League Soccer’s Week 20 action. Stay tuned to all the latest Chivas USA news following us on our Twitter account: @cdchivasusa
