Seattle Sounders FC vs. CD Chivas USA Report [CD CHIVAS USA]

Chivas USA look to record first win in Seattle

When Chivas USA face Western Conference rival Seattle Sounders FC this Sunday on the road, they will do so looking to record two firsts. The Rojiblancos will seek their first road win in Seattle and will also look to deliver Head Coach Jose Luis Real’s first victory away from Carson since taking over the reins at Chivas.

The all-time series began in 2009 in Sounders FC’s inaugural season in Major League Soccer, and in four previous meetings in the Pacific Northwest, the Goats have been able to take away a pair of draws. Sunday’s contest will be the second of three meetings programmed for this season, as Seattle took the first installment, 2-0, at the then-called Home Depot Center on June 1.

Led by Youth Academy Director Sacha van der Most in that match, it was the first time the Red-and-White had implemented a more conventional four-man back line, which gave the Goats a more compact and organized look. Seattle, however, still managed to take a first-half lead on Obafemi Martin’s goal, and were aided by an own-goal for the shutout.

Soon after, Real arrived to lead the flock and continue to reinforce his new formation and strategies. Real now leads the Rojiblancos in his fifth road match in search of his first MLS road win, with a record of 0-2-2 away from Carson. The former Chivas Guadalajara manager recorded his first League win in the Goats’ last match against Toronto FC, 1-0, at home.

The Rojiblancos enter the match having taken points in four of their last five games, including a win and two clean sheets. However the Goats will face a Seattle squad without one of their key weapons, as midfielder Eric Avila will sit out to serve a one-game suspension due to the red card he was issued in the match against TFC. Nevertheless, the Red-and-White will be aided with the recent arrivals of forward Erick Torres and defender Carlos Bocanegra, who made their debuts with the club in the TFC match and played integral roles in the win, which broke the Goats’ 14-game winless streak.

Torres started at center forward and knocked in the game-winning goal in the 79th minute, while Bocanegra also went the full 90 minutes at center back and helped goalkeeper and captain Dan Kennedy record his second clean sheet of the season.

Sounders FC come into the match with a 1-3-1 record in their last five matches, and will be without several key players in their starting 11, which could open the door for Chivas to pounce on the road result and extend their unbeaten record five out of their last six contests. The Rojiblancos will do so surely in front of a large and noisy crowd at CenturyLink Field, which will no doubt be ready to welcome their conference rival to square off for the 12th time in the all-time series.

The Goats come into this match after ending a winless streak held since March 30, thanks to a goal by recently acquired Erick Torres against Toronto FC on July 17.

Meanwhile in Seattle, a goal by another rookie, DeAndre Yedlin, earned the Sounders a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids in the team’s last league match. The tie added on to the Sounders seven-game unbeaten streak at home.

In Reserves League action, both teams will seek revenge, as the Red-and-White (2-1-1, 7 points) fell to the LA Galaxy 4-1 last Monday. The Sounders (1-5-1, 4 points) also lost their last match to the Colorado Rapids with a 3-2 final result.

Training Report: Last training session in LA

Chivas USA headed out to StubHub Center’s Field 5 Saturday morning for their last training session ahead of Sunday’s match against the Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field.

The group started with a light jog around the pitch before the Rojiblancos split in three groups to continue with their warm-up session with a few games of torito. Twenty minutes later, after some stretching, the group was ready to continue on with the technical part of training.

Under the instructions of assistant coaches Marco Fabian and Othoniel Gonzalez, and a close watch of Head Coach Jose Luis Real, the team worked on their defensive and offensive strategy with set pieces.

An hour later, the coaching staff called it a day, and while some players stretched and headed to the showers, a selected number tested their aim from the penalty spot.

Chivas arrive in Seattle.
