Chivas USA Introduce Cabrera and Caffrey Along with Quartet of 2014 Signings
Carson, Calif. (Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014) – Chivas USA formally introduced newly-appointed Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera along with First Assistant Coach Paul Caffrey to members of the media at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Carson, Calif on Tuesday. In addition, the club took the opportunity to present four of their seven off-season acquisitions to the Red-and-White First Team ahead of the club’s 10th season in Major League Soccer.
Francisco “Paco” Palencia, who will officially step in as Chivas USA Sporting Director beginning on Feb. 1, 2014, was the first panelist to address the media and introduce the coaches and players. Palencia expressed the importance of hiring one of the most respected individuals in MLS as well as at the international level as the club’s new manager.
“We are very excited about the new season,” Palencia said. “We want to become a really important team in the MLS, very competitive, with a lot of talent, and that is why we trust the new head coach, Wilmer Cabrera, and his assistant Paul Caffrey. We trust a lot in their skills, we know they have been working a long time together and we know they have a lot of potential.”
Afterwards, Cabrera addressed the media, which was highlighted by him conveying his pleasure over joining the Red-and-White organization and his plans for the squad ahead of the 2014 MLS regular season.
“For us it is a pleasure to be here, we are excited,” said Cabrera. “We are excited for the challenge and we have received the challenge with a lot of motivation and a lot of support. Support from the Chivas owners, support from the front office, support from Paco Palencia. When you feel that support you know that you are receiving the first and most important step to start a project.
“We know we are prepared. You need to be well prepared to command that support and to develop that project. That is something we are sure of, that is why we are here. And lastly, we know we are going to work with the players. We are going to be very united, a team that is very compact, not only mentally and in our work, but in everything we do. We feel that that commitment with the front office, with the coaching staff and the players, we can change the things that didn’t go well last year.”
Palencia then introduced four of the club’s off-season acquisitions – attackers Adolfo Bautista and Mauro Rosales, and defenders Andrew Jean-Baptiste and Tony Lochhead – in a jersey presentation ceremony and photo op.
The Red-and-White, who began their preseason camp on Monday, will kick off their 10th MLS season on Sunday, March 9, when they host the Chicago Fire at the StubHub Center starting at noon (PT).
