Chivas USA Fall, 3-0, to Philadelphia Union
Red-and-White close out homestand with loss, begin preparations for SuperClásico rematch in Week 14
CARSON, Calif. (Saturday, May 31, 2014) – Chivas USA fell at home, 3-0, to the Philadelphia Union Saturday night at the StubHub Center in the finale of their two-game homestand. The away side was led by forward Conor Casey’s two-goal performance and tallied their third goal on Cristian Maidana’s score to come away with three points in the interconference showdown.
The Red-and-White began getting forward with Leandro Barrera along the left sideline as the midfielder got off a pair of crosses into the box in the eighth and 11th minute. Martin Rivero looked to get on the end of the second entry but could not connect from the right side of the box with an attempted right-footed volley.
Philadelphia went up 1-0 in the 28th minute after being awarded a penalty kick for a Chivas handball on the left side of the box off a free kick. Casey lined up and fired inside the right post just out of the reach of goalkeeper Dan Kennedy, who anticipated correctly, to put the visiting side ahead.
Chivas looked to respond and continued to get numbers into their attacking third. In the 40th minute, midfielder Marco Delgado pushed the ball on the right wing and got off a low shot on frame that was collected by Union keeper Zac MacMath.
Playing a goal down early in the second half, the Goats looked to even the score by working a give-and-go sequence between Barrera and Rivero, but the play was broken up by the visitors’ back line as Barrera crossed into the box.
The Union pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 66th minute when Casey got on the end of a Maidana cross sent in from outside the left corner of the box to place his header into the back of the net as he made his run near the six-yard box. Philadelphia tallied their final goal of the match on Maidana’s strike from the left side of the box in the 76th minute after receiving the ball in space from Vincent Nogueira to secure the road result in the sides’ only meeting of the regular season.
Chivas USA will now gear up preparations for the second leg of the SuperClásico derby against cross-hall rival LA Galaxy. The Rojiblancos will serve as the visiting side in the rematch programmed for Sunday, June 8, beginning at 5 p.m. (PT). The match will be televised nationally on Univisión and in the Los Angeles region on KDOC-TV LA56. It can also be heard on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM.
