«My Light»

This is the season of lights. Christians light up one candle for each Sunday of Advent prior to the celebration of Christmas. Jewish families and congregations light up the lights of the Menorah during Hanukkah. These lights can be electric, wax candles or oil lamps. What matters most is their spiritual symbolism. But here is a twist. Jesus of Nazareth told his followers that they were the light of the world. (Matt 5:14) I hope that those of you who read these words spend some time of reflection about how his words apply to you. It may not seem significant to light one candle or small lamp in your home. One small light cannot dispel the darkness of your city, neighborhood or even of the entire house. However; in a dark night you can see the flickering light of a candle burning miles away. We are called to be lights in a world of darkness. As a visual reminder try to light a candle in your home each night as we approach the celebration of the birth of Christ. If possible, place it near your window so that others can see your light. Before you put the light out when retiring for the night, think about how and where you need to be a light the next day. Believe me, by Christmas day the world will be a better place. It will be a better world because there will be a few more better people in it. Jesus said: «Let your light shine before others.»
