“Spring Cleaning”

The prophet Isaiah is always relevant to our situation.  His words spoken and recorded so long ago have relevance for us as we clean house. He declares: “See the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare” (Isa. 42:9)  Reading this passage made me think about my love for old things. I think that as I grow older I tend to get more attached to things which were good and useful in the past but now are not working as well as they once did. Some of us find it difficult to let go of  familiar things and habits that bring some degree of comfort to our lives. We seldom realize how burdened we can become by “the former things.”  Most of us have had the experience of packing way too much to go on a trip. I know from personal experience that lugging heavy bags is not fun at all.   I think Isaiah may be unto something important here. Perhaps we should travel light in life, so that we can be free to do more for others and enjoy what really matters. Now is a good time to start divesting ourselves of so much unnecessary “baggage” and learning to live as people of faith. We don’t need as much as we think we do.  Now is a great time to do Spring Cleaning and clear out some of the clutter in your closets, garage and attic. However; more important is to unload clutter from memories and relationships. Repentance and forgiveness are ways to become free from relational, emotional and spiritual burdens. Oh, what a relief it is to let the former things pass and enjoy newness of life. You can have new life and have it abundantly. Lighten your load today and live!
