POLITICS AND SPORTS; KILLING THE GOOSE!9/2/2020
There was once a Countryman who possessed the most wonderful Goose you can imagine, for every day when he visited the nest, the Goose had laid a beautiful, glittering, golden egg. Then one day, after he had finished counting his money, the idea came to him that he could get all the golden eggs at once by killing the Goose and cutting it open. But when the deed was done, not a single golden egg did he find, and his precious Goose was dead.
We are living in very confusing times in a country that might be in a pathway towards drastic change. Our politicians are not offering a safeguard for our security as our system requires. The media, whose role should be of guardians of the truth, are led by bias towards either one of the party’s platforms and mostly repeat their falsehoods.
Whether we realize it or not, we have already lost our freedom of speech, being censored by the ruse of being “politically correct”, or as I lived in Cuba only what the rulers accept are permissible. In our case, the ones dictating our speech are the invisible minority that aspires to achieve control of our lives.
This always starts with the denial of our right to speak our minds, with a threat of losing our employment and/or reputation. The latest group of our population to fall for this type of manipulation is the people whose livelihood depends of sports. Let us be clear, they as everyone else should be entitled to express their views on any topic, controversial or not, related to sports or not.
What I object to is their infringement on the rights of us, the fans that use sports as a form of escape from our day to day pains. If we exercise our own rights to complain and refuse to attend games, support teams, and/or buy all kinds of apparel and shoes, and all other objects related to them, the huge sport establishment led by multinational corporations will suffer in their income and the first ones to have to adjust would be the players and other employees. We will be the goose, and our cash the eggs that they would kill as in Aesop’s fable.
They are many other venues available for their protests that would serve the cause of social justice and equality that they, as many, defend. It would not only satisfy the fans, but assure them and others of maintaining their source of revenue.
