Happy Birthday Libertarian Party

Happy birthday to the LP!

Libertarian Party celebrates its 36th birthday
Washington, D.C. – Today marks the 36th birthday of the Libertarian Party, America’s largest and most successful third party.  «Today, as we celebrate the founding of a political party dedicated completely to individual liberty and personal responsibility, we must remember that there is still so much more work to do,» says Libertarian Party National Chairman William Redpath.

«After more than three-and-a-half decades, the Libertarian Party is still the preeminent third party option for American voters,» says Redpath, «running more candidates at all levels of government than any other third party.  Throughout our 36 years of existence, our message of liberty has been unchanged and unwavering.  In times of political turmoil, the Libertarian Party has always been there, offering voters an alternative to the two major parties.»

The Libertarian Party was founded in the home of business executive Dave Nolan in Denver, Colorado, on Dec. 11, 1971.  The founders of the party were an eclectic group of disaffected Republicans, Democrats and independents.  The party has grown to become the largest and most powerful third party in the United States.

«Few alternative parties manage to survive and remain effective for as long as the Libertarian Party has,» says Nolan, a pioneer of the Libertarian Party. «After 36 years, we continue to remain a presence on the American political scene — electing candidates to office, supporting and opposing ballot measures, and affecting the outcome of many electoral contests. The Libertarian Party is the only consistent voice for liberty in the United States, and that fact is increasingly recognized.»

In addition to being a founder of the Libertarian Party, Nolan is the inventor of the Nolan Chart: a two-dimensional map of political systems that has largely replaced the old, linear left-right model.

The Libertarian Party has run a presidential candidate in every election since 1972.  Tonie Nathan, a vice presidential candidate in 1972, was the first woman in U.S. history to win an electoral vote.  Libertarians will nominate a presidential candidate Memorial Day weekend at their National Convention in Denver.

The Libertarian Party is America’s third largest political party, founded in 1971 as an alternative to the two main political parties.  You can find more information on the Libertarian Party by visiting http://www.lp.org.
