Chivas USA to face Impact in their Montreal debut
Chivas USA enter the second leg of their three-game, 10-day road trip on Sunday against the Montreal Impact in good form.
Having come away from their first match of the trip with a hard-fought scoreless draw at FC Dallas, the Rojiblancos have strung together consecutive points for the first time since march, and have only allowed a mere two goals in their last three contests under Head Coach Jose Luis Real.
Sunday’s match will mark the first and only meeting this season between the clubs and Chivas USA’s franchise debut at Stade Saputo.
The Red-and-White’s history against Montreal has been short-lived up to now, as the series is the youngest for the Goats. The young series began in 2012 during the Impact’s expansion season.
In their inaugural match last year at the then-named Home Depot Center, the Goats took the series advantage by welcoming the Canadian side to the League with a 2-1 loss. Former club’s forwards Juan Pablo Angel and Alejandro Moreno scored for the Red-and-White, while Felipe Martins scored the lone goal for the Impact that night.

Though the series has only produced one meeting thus far, the clubs have already met multiple times on the transaction front. Current Impact defender Zarek Valentin was drafted out of Akron University in 2011 by the Goats in the MLS SuperDraft and appeared in 25 matches in his rookie campaign.
Montreal would go on to select Valentin in the expansion draft the following off-season and the 21-year-old will now face his former club for the second time.
In addition, current Red-and-White defender Bobby Burling’s rights were also acquired by Montreal in expansion rounds. After a period of negotiations, Chivas USA acquired the center back via trade in August of 2012.
In their sophomore season in MLS, Montreal have gotten off to an impressive start, as they currently sit in first place in the East with a record of 9-4-3 as the half-way point of the season approaches. The Impact have been respectable of late with a record of 1-1-1 in their last three matches, including a 3-3 tie against conference arch-rival Toronto FC last Wednesday on the road.
In their first-ever match in Montreal, the Rojiblancos will look to give Real his first League win, as the former Chivas Guadalajara manager has already recorded his first two draws since making his debut on Canadian soil at Vancouver.
The combination of Real’s newly-implemented defensive tactics and the arrival of three offensive weapons heading into Sunday’s match, the Rebaño Angelino look poised to hand “El Güero” his first W.
The aforementioned offensive weapons will surely bolster the Red-and-White attack and come in the form of forward Tristan Bowen, who sat out Thursday’s match because of yellow card accumulation and fellow forward Julio Morales, who returned Thursday from his long international stint with Mexico’s U-20 National Team in the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. Coupled with Friday’s announcement that the club signed Academy product Caleb Calvert, Real will now have multiple options up top at his disposal to continue adding points.
Delgado excited for the new Goat
Just last Thursday, midfielder Marky Delgado was considered the youngest player to have ever signed a professional contract in the history of Chivas USA at the age of 16 years, 10 months and 17 days. On Friday, that record was stripped off Delgado as the Red-and-White signed Caleb Calvert as the youngest Homegrown player on the squad at the age of 16 years, 8 months and 13 days.

Adding ‘Rooney,’ as Calvert is best known among his teammates, was like signing a friend to the squad, as both Delgado and Calvert have played together in the Chivas USA Youth Academy.
“I think he’ll have more development [in the First Team],” said Delgado on Calvert. “He’ll be able to help the team, he’s a great striker. He has the mentality of a forward and you can tell in his work with the Academy and his twenty-something goals. With the help out here from the coaches, I think he can be something big in the future for this team.”
But for Delgado, there are no hard feelings about having his record taken. On the contrary, the 18 year-old Glendora native is happy to have a teammate that he can relate to.
“It’s good knowing that I’m no longer the youngest player on the squad because I won’t get made fun of as much,” Delgado said jokingly. “Now it’s time to make ‘Rooney’ feel what I felt.

Training Report: Preparing for Montreal
Early in the morning of this Saturday, July 6, Chivas USA traveled to Montreal Impact’s training facilities outside the city to work on their final details ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Eastern Conference host at 4 p.m. (PT) at Stade Saputo.
Training started with a warm-up session where players ran a series of 10-yards incrementing the speed. Later on they went on to playing a game of “Torito” with the whole team disposed around the mid-circle and three players in the center of it aiming to steal the ball away.
The session evolved to a more serious activity in which Head Coach José Luis Real faced the possible starting line-up to the reserves in a third of the pitch, to then go on with set pieces work.
After two hours, today’s training ended with penalty kick executions and stretching.
