Chivas USA Fall to LA Galaxy, 3-0, in Regular-Season Finale of SuperClásico
Red-and-White unable to generate enough offense after falling behind in first half
CARSON, Calif. (Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014) – Chivas USA fell in the regular-season finale of the SuperClásico, 3-0, to the LA Galaxy Sunday evening at the StubHub Center. Playing as the away side, the Galaxy were able to secure a three-point result with a pair of Gyasi Zardes scores and Robbie Keane’s second-half tally.
The Rojiblancos generated their first promising look at getting on the score sheet by the fifth minute on a short touch sequence between Nathan Sturgis and recently acquired Nigel Reo-Coker. The midfielder was able to get into position inside the right side of the box and sent his attempt on frame from short distance, but Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo was able to collect the shot.
Chivas looked to get into range when Erick Torres set up fellow forward Felix Borja outside the box in the 24th minute. With a marker between him and the net, Borja created space for himself, squared up to goal and fired from behind the arc, sending the strike over the crossbar.
The Red-and-White created another dangerous look at opening the scoring in the 38th minute off a free kick taken by Torres. The striker lined up directly behind the arc and fired at goal from about 35 yards out, but Penedo was able to secure the threat.
Three minutes later, Galaxy were able to take a 1-0 lead after Landon Donovan played Zardes a short pass to his left that led the forward into the box. Zardes then found the back of the net with his right-footed shot inside the far post to send the visiting side into the half with the advantage.
Galaxy extended their lead to 3-0 beginning in the 68th minute when Keane worked the ball around his defender and placed his chip shot from behind the arc to the back of the net. Three minutes later, Zardes tallied his second goal of the night assisted once again by Donovan as he made his run inside the box toward the near post. The Red-and-White were left playing a man short beginning in the 75th minute after Torres was sent off with a straight red and were unable to get on the scoreboard, as the result stood at three-nil.
Chivas USA now have a short turnaround time to begin preparations to host conference foe Seattle Sounders FC this Wednesday in the second leg of the three-game season series. The match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (PT) and will be televised on Time Warner Cable Deportes. The action can also be heard on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM.
