“We Need Advent”
November 27, 2017
Christian communities around the world are preparing to observe the season of Advent. Members and visitors will be treated to rituals designed to emphasize the significance of the four Sundays prior to the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Advent literally means that “something is coming.” For us that something is the birth of a child who became a man able to change history and the lives of individuals. Each Sunday of Advent has a theme which is taught by the lighting of a symbolic candle. I believe we need Advent because the world desperately hungers for what each candle represents. The four candles stand for Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. It is significant that most Christian churches involve children in the service of Advent candles. The messages of this season are especially exciting to children because of their anxious expectation of what is coming. We need Advent because it reminds us that there is plenty of work to be done by women and men of good will around the planet. We need Advent because without the visual reminder of the four candles, we could become complacent, cynical or self-seeking. We need Advent as a challenge to live our lives based on the four lights and to keep them burning in all the dark corners of our world. After the four candles, Christians will light the Christ candle. It represents our hope for God’s love to light up our lives. Get ready!
